Kwantlen Polytechnic University (commonly abbreviated to KPU) is a public degree-granting undergraduate polytechnic university in British Columbia, Canada, with campuses in Surrey, Richmond, Cloverdale, Whalley, and Langley.

Kwantlen Polytechnic was founded as Kwantlen College in 1981, as a response to the growing need for expanded vocational training across the Fraser Valley.

In 1995, it became a university college. In 2008, the provincial government announced its intention to amend the University Act to appoint Kwantlen University College as a polytechnic university.  

KPU is one of the largest institutions by enrolment in British Columbia with a total of 20,000 students and 1,400 faculty members across its five locations, encompassing the Metro Vancouver district.

KPU provides undergraduate and vocational education including bachelor’s degrees, associate degrees, diplomas, certificates, apprenticeships, and citations in more than 140 diverse programs.

The school operates widely as an undergraduate polytechnic university but also serves as a vocational school offering apprenticeships for skilled trades as well as diplomas in vocational education for skilled technicians and workers in support roles in professions such as engineering, accountancy, business administration, nursing, medicine, architecture, and criminology.

KPU has over 140 different programs across seven distinct faculties — Academic and Career Preparation, Arts, Business, Design, Health, Science and Horticulture, and Trades and Technology — where students can pursue a degree, diploma, certificate, citation, or work towards completing an apprenticeship.

KPU has five campuses that are all in British Columbia’s Lower Mainland. They are situated in:

  • Surrey at Newton Town Centre
  • Cloverdale, in the City Centre.

Kwantlen Polytechnic University international student education centers are located in the Surrey campus and the Richmond campus, about 15 to 40 minutes drive from downtown Vancouver.

At KPU, tuition and mandatory student fees are usually assessed at a rate per credit. Currently, international students pay approximately $732.53 per credit for tuition and fees, with the exception of ENGQ and ELST courses, which are $405.36 per credit.

University Levied Student Fees: $47.92 per credit

ENGQ and ELST courses:

Tuition: $378.85 per credit

Admission Requirements

Kwantlen Polytechnic University has certain admission requirements. This is made in provision for those who wish to pursue their undergraduate, postgraduate or Post-Baccalaureate degree programs.

Undergraduate Admission

To be admitted as a student in an undergraduate program (i.e. a certificate, diploma, associate degree, or bachelor’s degree program), you will have to show that:

  • You meet KPU’s English proficiency requirement*
  • You have graduated high school (secondary school) OR completed at least 24 credits of undergraduate-level credits from a recognized institution (Note: it is also possible to be admitted to certain programs as a mature student)

Post-Baccalaureate Admission

To be admitted as a student in a post-baccalaureate program, you will have to show that:

  • You meet KPU’s English proficiency requirement
  • You have graduated from a bachelor’s degree program
  • You meet program specific requirements for the following programs:
  • Human Resources Management
  • Technical Management and Services
  • Operations and Supply Chain Management

Graduate Admission

To be admitted as a student in a graduate program, you will have to show that:

  • You meet KPU’s English proficiency requirement
  • You have graduated from a bachelor’s degree program with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.67
  • You have reference letters, resumes, and/or statement of intent depending on the specific Graduate Admissions requirement of your faculty

Candidates are to ensure that they are more than 19 years of age

Should have a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.0;

ENGL1100 / TOEFL IBT 88 (20 or more) / IELTS 6.5 (6.0 or more per item) / 70;

Furthermore, the local medical insurance is about $402.60 (a semester is $ 201.30).
