Requirement for international students:

The requirements for International students at University of British Columbia  are written below;

Applicants are required to submit a transcript of grades to show the completion of your courses. This should encompass courses in progress and anticipated grades.

Applicants are required to submit official transcripts (showing all courses attempted as well as the courses in progress) from your current post-secondary institution. This should be sent directly to UBC by the issuing institution.

Submission of SAT/ACT test scores is optional. It may however be added to further prove your proficiency in English.

Applicants are required to have a minimum of 70% in Grade 11 or Grade 12 English (or their equivalents). UBC recommends (not required) at least six academic/non-academic Grade 12 courses.

Depending on the degree program of choice, the minimum grade point average for admission at UBC is 60% or C or a 2.0 on a 4.0 point scale typically on the most recent 30 credits attempted.

It is worth noting that meeting the listed GPA does not guarantee your instant admission into the prominent Institution. The probability of you being admitted with any GPA score depends on the program you are going for.

English language competency: The university’s official language of instruction is English, so, as a prospective student, you are demanded to demonstrate how proficient you are in English.

You can demonstrate that in any of these ways;

You are to complete four or more consecutive years of recognized, full-time education in English within Canada immediately prior to attending UBC.

 You are expected to finish four or more consecutive years of full-time education in English in a country other than Canada where English is the principal language. These four years must be immediately prior to attending UBC.

You must attain at least a grade of 70% in your final exam on the provincial examination portion of Alberta English Language Arts 30-1, BC English 12 ( achieved August 2019 or earlier), or equivalents.

Applicants must reach at least a final grade of 4 on Advanced Placement (AP) English Language & Composition or AP Literature & Composition, or achieve a final grade of 5 or higher on International Baccalaureate English A (higher-level or standard-level).

Applicants are demanded to achieve the competence standard indicated by one of the “Tests of English Language Proficiency” that evaluates skills in listening, reading, speaking, and writing.

Applicants must successfully complete six credits of post-secondary first-year English studies at a recognized university in an English-speaking country. You must submit a transcript showing the completion of these courses.

You must Graduate from a recognized degree program at an accredited university where English is the primary language of instruction in a country where English is the dominant language.

Attend four or more years at an eligible international secondary school that uses English as the language of instruction but operates in a country where the primary language is not English.

These four years must be immediately prior to attending UBC. You will need to submit a transcript as soon as possible to UBC’s Undergraduate Admissions Office.

Here is the required minimum score for any of the tests:

  • CAEL/CAEL Online (Canadian Academic English Language Assessment)       
  • You are expected to have a minimum score of an Overall 70
  • CAQ: Cambridge English Qualifications (B2 First, C1 Advanced, C2 Proficiency)      
  • Undergraduates are required to have a minimum score of 180
  • CEL (UBC Certificate in English)                                                                         
  • You are required to have a minimum score of 600
  • IELTS International English Language Testing System (Academic)
  • You are required to have a minimum score of 6.5, with no part less than 6.0
  • PTE Pearson Test of English (Academic)
