Are you a future student of Barnard College who wants to know vital information about the school? We will be talking about “Is Barnard College Ivy League”?

We will also look at Barnard College’s acceptance rate, ranking, and admission requirements in this article. We will be doing so to enable you to know vital things about the school as you desired.

Overview

Barnard College is a private women’s liberal arts college located in the borough of Manhattan in New York City and it was founded in 1889.

Barnard College is an all-female college in Manhattan with a partnership with the school across the street, Columbia University. See Barnard Transfer Acceptance Rate.

Barnard is one of Columbia University’s four undergraduate colleges which was founded as a response to Columbia’s refusal to admit women into their institution, Barnard is affiliated with but legally and financially separate from Columbia.

Barnard women can take classes, play sports and join organizations at Columbia University- and Columbia students have the same opportunities at Barnard College.

The two schools are joined in an athletic consortium and compete in the NCAA Division I Ivy League Conference. The school’s own mascot is a dancing Barnard Bear named Millie.

Students receive their diplomas from Columbia University signed by both Presidents of Columbia and Barnard.

The school has a renowned Barnard Center for Research On Women, which sponsors conferences and panels on the subjects of gender, feminism, and women’s rights.

The college is one of the original Seven Sisters, seven highly selective liberal arts colleges in the Northeastern United States that were historically women’s colleges. (Five currently exist as women’s colleges.)

Barnard College famous alumnae include many prominent leaders in science, religion, politics, the Peace Corps, medicine, law, education, communications, theater, and business.

Is Barnard College Ivy League?

Yes, Barnard is an Ivy League school because it is part of Columbia University which happens to be one of the eight ivy League schools.

Barnard is one of Columbia’s four undergraduate colleges but it is considered a “self-sustaining entity” within the larger university.

But that might not mean what you think it means. Founded in 1958, the Ivy League is simply a Division I athletic conference in NCAA, not unlike the Big Ten or the ACC.

Of course, people don’t respect the Ivy League because of its athletic achievements. The Ivy League consists of some of the oldest and most respected private research schools in the country.

In addition to Columbia University, Brown University, Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Harvard University, the University of Pennsylvania, Princeton University, and Yale University are all members of the Ivy League.

Except for Cornell, which was founded in 1865, all of the Ivy League schools were established before the American Revolution.

Among the Ivies, only Harvard, Yale, and Princeton are older (as a public institution, the College of William and Mary, founded in 1693, is not in the Ivy League).

It’s not just age or athletic prowess that makes an Ivy League education so desirable. These schools are known for their commitment to academic excellence and their very exclusive admissions.

Even among its Ivy sisters, Columbia ranks near the top, trailing only Princeton and Harvard.

As its impressive list of alumni shows, Barnard College made its name by producing important contributors in the fields of political science and the humanities.

Students have a bit of fluidity when it comes to picking a major (or two). While Barnard College offers bachelor’s degrees in over 50 areas, students can design their own major or enroll in a cooperative degree program with Columbia University, the Manhattan School of Music, the Jewish Theological Seminary, or Juilliard.

Students also can join the Accelerated 4+1 Pathways program, in which they earn a bachelor’s degree and then transition to a Columbia graduate program to earn a master’s degree in their 5th year.

Once they graduate, Barnard students join a prestigious list.
