You are welcome to this academic page. We will discuss Georgetown University with a focus on if it is an Ivy league school or not, acceptance rate, and ranking. If you are a student of the school, don’t hesitate to read the article to the end to access the information in it.

Founded by Bishop John Carroll in 1789, Georgetown University is a private research university situated in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C.

As the oldest Catholic institution of higher education in the United States has grown to comprise eleven undergraduate and graduate schools, including the Walsh School of Foreign Service, McDonough School of Business, Medical School, Law School, and a campus in Qatar.

Georgetown university was established in the Jesuit tradition and it has continued to maintain its tradition notwithstanding that the majority of students are not Catholic.

The institution offers degree programs in forty-eight disciplines, enrolling an average of 7,500 undergraduate and 10,000 post-graduate students from so many parts of the world.

Its athletic teams are called the Hoyas and they compete in the NCAA’s Division I. They also compete in the Big East Conference generally.

Although the football team competes in the Division I FCS Patriot League, the sailing team in the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association, and the rowing teams in the Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges.

The school has produced notable alumni since it began. Some of its alumni include 13 Nobel Prize Laureates, 27 Rhodes Scholars, 32 Marshall Scholars, 33 Truman Scholars, 429 Fulbright Scholars, 2 U.S. Presidents, and 2 U.S. Supreme Court Justices.

Is Georgetown University an Ivy League School?

Georgetown University is not an Ivy League school. The Ivy League is an athletic conference consisting of Harvard, Princeton, Dartmouth, Brown, Cornell, Columbia, Yale, and the University of Pennsylvania.

Since its founding in 1954, the Ivies have also gained prominence for academic and research excellence. So much so that any high-achieving school is inevitably compared to the League.

Georgetown University is no exception. Although it is an honor to be associated with the Ivy League, it has established its own brand over the years.

Like many Ivy League graduates, Georgetown alumni tend to reach the upper crust of American society.

Many former politicians opt to join Georgetown’s illustrious faculty, including former Secretaries of State Madeleine Albright and Henry Kissinger, former U.N. ambassador Jeane Kirkpatrick, and former CIA director George Tenet. So it is no surprise that Georgetown university is often regarded as an Ivy League school.

The school is known for its rigorous undergraduate programs, and it also competes in the NCAA’s Division I FCS Patriot League, the sailing team in Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association, and the rowing teams in the Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges.

Georgetown University Ranking

Georgetown, as an institution, occupies top spots in most well-recongnized publications.

U.S. News ranks the school 23rd among national universities, nevertheless, it is in the top 10 for veterans and service learning.

According to Washington Monthly, a notable rival of U.S. News ranks Georgetown university at 8th. This makes sense considering Washington Monthly prioritizes colleges based on “their contribution to the public good in three broad categories: social mobility, research, and promoting public service.”

Even some Ivy Leagues (Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Brown) do not rank as high. Georgetown also ranks second — only after Stanford — in WM’s social mobility ranking.

Furthermore, by using academic and financial data from the U.S. Department of Education, Niche.com considers student and alumni reviews in their rankings, where Georgetown ranks 25th overall.

However, Niche.com names it the 1st place to study international relations, the 2nd best Catholic college, and 3rd in both political science and accounting/finance.

Notwithstanding the different rankings, a common thread through all these publications is that Georgetown university students are in elite company.

In a country with some of the best schools in the world, being in the top 25 is certainly not a bad place to be.

Georgetown University Acceptance Rate

Georgetown University has an acceptance rate of 12% and an early acceptance rate of 10.8%. which implies that the school is extremely selective in giving admission.

Half of the admitted students of Georgetown University have an SAT score between 1410 and 1550 or an ACT score of 32 and 35.

However, one-quarter of admitted applicants achieved scores above these ranges and one-quarter scored below these ranges.
